This installment of the GCS Prep Spotlight presents us with our first female prep athlete: freshman Avery England of Woodlawn High School in Woodlawn, IL. She is a two sport athlete competing in both softball and volleyball.

It’s no surprise that Avery stood out as she has been doing amazing things on the diamond from a young age. Her poise behind the plate is a combination of experience and hard work. Avery has been catching her big sister Caitlen, who pitches for Rend Lake College, since before she was ten years old. That experience combined with the strong work ethic she gets from her father has given Avery a leg up on the competition.

Avery was already turning heads as a sixth grader, but has gotten progressively better over the last few years. A force behind the plate as well as at second base, Avery says she loves the work it takes to play the position and “dares the other team to run” on her.

That isn’t arrogance talking, but rather confidence born out of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to a team first attitude her dad Calen instilled at an early age. Avery epitomizes the “no ‘I’ in team” mentality.

As an honor roll student Avery puts just as much work in the classroom as she does on the field or in the gym. She is a bright girl with a very bright future. Congratulations Avery! We here at Gateway City Sports look forward to more great things from you in the future.
